Matthew Perrée, at 29, the youngest member in the field, has won his first big event

Carrefour Pétanque Club’s men’s singles championship was won by the youngest competitor, 29-year Matthew Perrée. It was the first time he’d ever competed in a singles knockout tournament and he was thrilled to bits by his 13-11 victory against Andrew Bellamy-Burt.The other semi-finalists who came through the opening round by winning their groups were Alan Lahiffe and Sid Simkin. Alan had won the event for the last two years but was denied the hat-trick after Bellamy-Burt beat him 13-1. The other semi was much closer, Matthew just shading it 13-11. The women’s singles competition was won by Christine Eccles who made it three wins in four years with a straightforward 13-3 victory over the defending champion, Joan Le Roy. In the semi-finals Christine won a tough match against Hélène Retrosi, 13-8, while Joan cruised through to the final with a 13-0 whitewash over Ruth Perrée.
